Castle of Weitra

In 1581, Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II. enfeoffed baron Wolf Rumpf zu Wielroß with the city and dominion of Weitra, which by then was one of the largest and richest ones of the region. Wolf Rumpf hired the imperial architect Pietro Ferrabosco and according to his plans, between 1590 and 1606 the old fortress was converted into a magnificent Renaissance castle, which is now more than ever the lively center and leading attraction of the Northwest Waldviertel.
Wolf Rumpf's widow Maria, nee Countess Arco, married a native of Swabia Count Friedrich von Fürstenberg. In 1607 she bequeathed him the city and castle of Weitra. Ever since the Fürstenberg family has owned the castle and the dominion of Weitra.
