From Hojná Voda to Gmünd, the Lainsitztal Iron Curtain Trail leads over hilly forest and field sections through the idyllic landscape of the Waldviertel. Along the route, which is steeped in history, Weitra Castle invites you to make an impressive first stop. The permanent exhibition there, which focuses on the Iron Curtain, offers unforgettable insights into history, politics and culture. All cyclists who want to experience rural charm and urban flair are recommended to stop at the destination of Gmünd. A visit to the town in the western Waldviertel with its colorful boutiques and inviting cafés rounds off the tour perfectly. The good news for those who haven't had enough yet: The cycling fun can continue! The Lainsitztal Iron Curtain Trail can be ideally supplemented with a section of the Iron Curtain Trail - EuroVelo 13 from Gmünd to Hojna Voda on the Czech side. This easily turns the long-distance tour into a varied circular tour.
The route is suitable for trekking bikes.
Carry enough food and drink with you!The starting point of the Lainsitztaler Iron Curtain Trail is the Czech Hojná Voda. From there, the route leads by bike across the Austrian border to Hirschenwies and Harbach. Through Wultschau and Reinprechts, you then reach Weitra, where a stop at Weitra Castle is recommended. The remaining section leads from Unserfrau via Wielands to Gmünd, where cozy inns invite you to a well-deserved refreshment.
Besides scenic advantages and places of historical significance, the Lainsitztaler Iron Curtain Trail also offers sporting flexibility. In combination with the Iron Curtain Trail – EuroVelo 13, the route also works as a circular route. In this case, you can switch to the Austrian side already near the town of Nové Hrady – the highlight Weitra Castle remains part of the program. This adds a varied route experience with historical flair – a rewarding combination.
