This extensive loop trail takes you through the beautiful Waldviertel countryside, past fields and meadows, first to the pilgrimage town of St. Wolfgang and then on to Spital, one of the oldest towns in the Waldviertel.
The circular route starts at Sparkasseplatz by the signs in front of the brewery. We cross the traffic circle and turn right into Stadlgasse at the nursery. We continue along this street and follow the path to the right over a bridge into the Veitsgraben and then further left to the underpass of the Waldviertelbahn. From here we continue to the crossroads (Materl) and take the right-hand path which leads us into the Hausschachenwald forest. Above the Winkelteich pond, we turn left and walk to the gravel pit - here we turn left past the forest road barrier - and continue through the forest to the asphalt path towards St. Wolfgang. The path continues past the fortified church to Gasthof Haubner and then along the local road towards Weitra until the St. Wolfgang goods road branches off to the left. From here, we continue straight ahead - past the hiking trail branching off to the right - where we cross a pipe bridge in the direction of Sulz after approx. 200 meters. After approx. 1.5 km we come to hiking trail no. 73 - we follow this to the left for a short distance - but then stay on trail no. 33, which leads us further uphill to Sulz. In Sulz, we turn left, cross the main road and follow the asphalt path to Walterschlag. In Walterschlag, we turn left at the fire extinguishing pond and continue through the village to the end of the village - here we turn right to Oberwindhag. The path leads us uphill through the village to the end of the village. We follow the asphalt path to the right and after approx. 300 m turn left onto the gravel path and walk first uphill and then downhill through the forest to Spital. In Spital, we initially stay to the right and after approx. 300 m follow the Spital-Weitra goods road to the left until we reach the railroad underpass in Veitsgraben in Weitra. From here, the trail continues along Stadlgasse to the starting point of the circular trail at Sparkasseplatz.
Sportswear, athletic shoes, and hiking boots
Starting at the Weitra Brewery, the trail leads out of town toward Veitsgraben, through the Waldviertelbahn underpass. Following the dirt road and passing a wayside shrine, the trail heads toward Hausschachenwald, past the Winkelteich, and on toward St. Wolfgang. Along the way, you’ll find the old fortified church of St. Wolfgang; the route continues toward Sulz, Walterschlag, and Oberwindhag. Upon arriving in Spital, you’ll see the Maltese Church and follow the farm road to Weitra, where you’ll return to the railroad underpass in Veitsgraben. We walk along Stadelgasse, where we soon find ourselves back in front of the brewery, where we can end our walk.
