The “Fortified Weitra” walking tour begins at the city gate and leads through the old town, past the castle, and then along the city wall, circling the entire town.
Walk through the city gate and follow Obere Landstraße to Rathausplatz. Even from a distance, you can see the old town hall, which forms the centerpiece of the square. Below the town hall, nestled among parked cars and hidden behind an unassuming wooden gate, is the cistern.
You’ll find the next stop by walking along the houses on Obere Zeile and then turning right onto Schlossgasse. After about 150 meters, you’ll reach the Meierhof, where you can climb the Schlossberg. On your way back down into town, turn left past the glass case containing a piece of the Berlin Wall. You are now in the Hofgraben and are already walking right past your next stop—the city wall and the observation deck.
Continue your tour by following the Hofgraben to the end, then crossing Dr.-Kordik-Platz and the Untere Landstraße to pass through the Lower Gate. You are now on the Promenade and will walk outside the city wall, past the bell foundry, around the city, and back to the Upper City Gate.
